The new Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) is on shelves today, starting at $279.99 in the U.S. and $379.99 in Canada. From the modern design to the ways the thermostat can help you save energy and stay comfortable, here are nine new things to know about the Nest Learning Thermostat.
1. A sleek, modern look you’ll love
While you’ll notice some of the same beloved design features — like the rotating metal bangle and curved lens — there are some fresh design details. The crystal lens display is 60% larger and now if you click down on the display you can see a description of what your thermostat is doing in the background — like if it's shifting your target temperature by one degree to help avoid less clean energy with Nest Renew. Plus, there are new colors to match any home: Polished Silver, Polished Gold, and Polished Obsidian.
2. More help at a glance
With a dynamic screen and larger display, you can get helpful information whenever you walk by your thermostat. When you’re standing across from it, you'll see a single piece of helpful information, like the time, outdoor weather or indoor temperature. As you walk closer, you’ll see a more detailed view with information like humidity or outdoor air quality. Plus, you can customize what information shows up on the home screen based on what’s most useful to you, like animations showing the weather outside or an analog clock. This is all possible thanks to the new Dynamic Farsight and Soli sensor.
3. Smarter ways to help you save
Take the guesswork out of saving energy with the new Adaptive Eco feature that changes the temperature while you’re away to automatically maximize savings, while also making sure your home returns to your preferred temperature within an hour of you coming home. For example, if it's a cold winter day, Adaptive Eco may only lower the temperature slightly while you're away so your home can warm back up before you return. Meanwhile, if it’s a mild spring day, the thermostat can make a bigger adjustment to an efficient energy-saving temperature so you can save even more and keep your home comfortable.
4. Scheduling made easier
Smart Schedule makes programming your thermostat to cut back on energy usage even easier. The new feature gives you a temperature schedule to start with and, over time, the schedule will adapt to your preferences and routine. Once Smart Schedule identifies a potential schedule change that could help you save energy or stay comfortable, it can automatically update your schedule or suggest a change in the Google Home app depending on your preference. All you have to do is choose to accept or reject these suggestions in the Google Home app.
5. A new Nest Temperature Sensor and comfort features
Every Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) now comes with an all-new Nest Temperature Sensor to help you get just the right temperature in the rooms that matter most. Choose to prioritize the temperature of whichever room the sensor is in at different times of day in your temperature schedule. For example, you can prioritize the temperature of your bedroom in the evening and your office in the daytime. Or create a comfortable average across rooms if you have multiple sensors.
6. Intuitive controls in the Google Home app
The Google Home app is the one place to control all your smart home devices, including your Nest Learning Thermostat. Many of the most popular thermostat controls in the app, like adjusting the temperature or seeing all of your climate devices, have been redesigned. If you’re not at home, you can change the temperature directly from your Pixel Watch. Or if you don’t want to get up from the couch, you can control the thermostat via the Home Panel on the new Google TV Streamer when it becomes available on September 24.
7. At home in any Matter-certified app
The new Nest Learning Thermostat is Matter-certified, so you can tweak the temperature or change your thermostat’s mode in any Matter-certified smart home app. It’s easy to get started, scan a QR code on the thermostat and connect it to the app of your choice.
8. Works with most HVAC systems
The inside of the thermostat has been as thoughtfully designed as the outside. Installation is easier than ever with a new LED light to see if power’s present, and the thermostat gets enough power from your existing thermostat wiring so it doesn't require a C-wire in most homes. The new backplate has 2 additional wiring terminals to work with humidifier, dehumidifier, and ventilation systems - expanding compatibility. If you have a ventilation system, you can use Smart Ventilation, which helps bring in air if temperatures are mild and outdoor air quality is healthy. If outdoor air quality is unhealthy, the system will pause bringing in outdoor air.
9. Our most sustainable thermostat yet
Designed with sustainability in mind, the Nest Learning Thermostat is built with recycled materials, including plastics and metals. For the first time, the battery contains 100% recycled cobalt, and the packaging is 100% plastic-free.
