In Côte d’Ivoire, COVID-19 restrictions initially brought down the number of infections. However, as the restrictions were relaxed, the number of cases peaked yet again. This tourism-dependent country also felt a severe impact from travel restrictions imposed by countries worldwide.
In response to a national request, the African Development Bank approved a loan of €75 million to Côte d’Ivoire to support the country’s national COVID-19 response efforts.
“The objective of the program is to [create] the conditions for resilience and a rapid post-crisis recovery of the Ivorian economy,” explains Marie-Laure Akin Olugbade, Director-General for the Bank’s North Africa Regional Development and Business Delivery Office. “The response is based on three complementary components: health response, social protection and the continuation of production capabilities [and] jobs.”
The Bank’s support to the national budget has supported more than 117,000 vulnerable households and has provided an estimated 2 million children with dry food rations.
